Eosin Methylene Blue Broth (EMB) is a selective enrichment medium designed for the cultivation and detection of Gram-negative enteric bacteria, particularly members of the Enterobacteriaceae family.

The medium incorporates selective agents (eosin Y and methylene blue) that inhibit the growth of Gram-positive organisms, allowing Gram-negative bacteria to grow selectively. It is commonly used in microbiological analysis of water, food, dairy products, and clinical samples for the detection of coliforms and fecal contamination.

Eosin Methylene Blue Broth supports the growth and differentiation of lactose-fermenting organisms based on their metabolic activity, making it useful for preliminary identification and enrichment prior to further testing.

🛠️ How to Use

1. Suspend the required quantity of EMB Broth powder in distilled water (as per label instructions).

2. Heat gently with stirring to dissolve completely.

3. Dispense into tubes or flasks.

4. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.

5. Cool to room temperature.

6. Inoculate the sample aseptically.

7. Incubate at 35–37°C for 18–24 hours.

• Store dehydrated medium in a cool, dry place (10–30°C)

• Keep container tightly closed

• Protect from light and moisture

• Prepared medium should be used fresh or stored at 2–8°C for short-term use
