Price range: ₹950.00 through ₹68,960.00

⚙️ Principle

The performance of Tryptone Bile Agar is based on nutritional support combined with selective inhibition:

  • Tryptone (casein digest) supplies essential amino acids, peptides, and nitrogen, supporting microbial metabolism and growth
  • Bile salts mimic intestinal conditions and act as selective inhibitors, suppressing non-enteric and Gram-positive organisms
  • Only microorganisms capable of resisting bile toxicity are able to grow and form colonies
  • The medium does not contain strong differential indicators, so identification is based on growth presence, colony morphology, and further confirmatory tests

This selective pressure ensures that the recovered organisms are more likely to be of intestinal or fecal origin.

Product Description

Tryptone Bile Agar – HX-Media

Product Overview

Tryptone Bile Agar is a selective solid culture medium specifically formulated for the isolation, detection, and enumeration of bile-tolerant microorganisms, particularly those of enteric origin. It is widely used across water testing, food microbiology, dairy analysis, pharmaceutical quality control, and environmental monitoring, where the detection of such organisms serves as a key indicator of hygienic quality and possible fecal contamination.

The formulation is centered around tryptone (enzymatic digest of casein), which provides a rich and readily utilizable source of nitrogen, amino acids, peptides, and essential growth nutrients. This ensures that microorganisms capable of surviving selective conditions are able to grow efficiently and form well-defined colonies.

A critical component of the medium is the inclusion of bile salts, which function as the primary selective agent. These compounds simulate the intestinal environment and exert an inhibitory effect on most Gram-positive and non-enteric bacteria, thereby restricting growth to organisms that possess natural resistance to bile toxicity. Tryptone Bile Agar selective pressure allows the medium to favor the recovery of Gram-negative enteric bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp., and Salmonella spp., as well as certain bile-tolerant Gram-positive organisms like enterococci.

Unlike strongly differential media, Tryptone Bile Agar is primarily designed for selective growth rather than biochemical differentiation. Therefore, it is often used as a screening or preliminary isolation medium, after which further confirmatory biochemical or molecular tests are performed for definitive identification.

Tryptone Bile Agar medium supports uniform colony development, allowing for easy observation, enumeration, and subculturing of isolates. Its balanced formulation and reproducibility make it suitable for both routine quality control testing and high-throughput laboratory workflows.

Due to its ability to selectively recover microorganisms associated with the intestinal tract, Tryptone Bile Agar plays a crucial role in monitoring contamination in water supplies, food products, and processing environments, helping ensure compliance with public health and regulatory standards.
